Pablo Escobar’s Story – A Drug Trafficker
In the year 1975, Escobar started growing his cocaine business. Even the United States flew a plane himself for a smuggling deal. Then he dismantled the plane and hung it on top of one of his cattle farms in Hacienda Napoles. His reputation grew further in 1975 when Fabio Restrepo, a well-known Medellin dealer, was apparently killed by Escobar, from whom he had bought 14 kg.
Later, all of Restrepo’s men were informed that they now work for Pablo Escobar. In May 1976, Escobar and several of his men were arrested and were found to have thirty-nine pounds of white paste from Ecuador after returning to Medellin with a heavy load. Initially, Pablo unsuccessfully tried to bribe Medellin judges who were making a case against him.
After several months of legal wrangling, Pablo killed the two arresting officers, and the case was then closed. This was the time when he devised his way of dealing with the authorities, either bribing them or killing them. His brother Roberto Escobar states that Pablo landed in the trade only because the ban had become so dangerous that it was difficult for traffic.
He could earn far more money than a truck full of cocaine, 40 boxes of alcohol and cigarettes. There was no drug cartel at that time and there were only a few drug barons, so there was a lot of trade for everyone. He bought cocaine paste, which he refined in a lab built in a two-story house in Medellin.
During his first visit, Pablo bought a modest £ 30 paste, which became his first step towards building his empire. First, he smuggled cocaine into the aircraft’s old tires, and then a pilot could earn as much as 500,000 pounds per flight depending on how many kilos he could smuggle.
In between, he did lots of illegal works like this to earn extra money. Pablo Escobar once said that the essence of the cocaine trade is simple, you bribe someone here, you bribe someone there and you give money to a friendly banker to help get the money back. Although Escobar was seen as an enemy of the Colombian governments and the United States, he was a hero to many people in Medellin.
Despite his popular image among the Medellin community, Escobar was famous among his business associates as an insecure, paranoid, ruthless murderer. It is reported that his brother had said, Pablo was so committed to his loyalty that he once threatened him with a gunshot over a minor misunderstanding.
His brother said that his ability to befriend the dangerous and intimidate the powerful drove him as fast as he could run. At the peak of his power, drug traffickers from Medellín and other regions handed over between 20 and 35% of their Colombian cocaine-related income to Escobar. He earned lots of wealth from his illegal business. In the year 1993, the net worth of Pablo Escobar was estimated at $30 billion USD.
Death
While working in Illegal, he kept avoiding the clutches of the police several times. There was always a war between Pablo and the Columbia Police. The war against Escobar ended on 2 December 1993, when he once again tried to escape from the search block.
Using a radio triangulation technique obtained as part of US efforts, a Colombian electronic surveillance team found it hidden in a middle-class barrio in Medellin. As officers approached, firing began with Escobar and his bodyguard, Alvaro de Jesus Agudelo aka El Limón.
Two fugitives tried to reach the back road, running on the roofs of houses around the road, but the Colombian National Police shot both. At the same time, he died. He was fired on the leg, torso, and ears, with the deadliest target being on the ear.
It has never been proven who fired the last target on Escobar’s head, whether it was shot during the shootout or as a possible performance and there was widespread speculation about the subject. A very popular belief is that Hugo Aguilar did the job of Escobar with just one shot from his 9mm pistol. Some family members believe that Escobar may have committed suicide.
